Triathlete crowned junior sportsman of the year twice

Eastern Courier:

Success is coming thick and fast for a East Auckland triathlete.

In September, 17-year-old Daniel Whitburn won his under-19 division at the ITU World Triathlon Age Group Championships in the Netherlands.

The Farm Cove local has now been crowned Young Sportsman of the Year at the College Sports Auckland Awards, and only days later he received the Counties Manukau Junior Sportsman of the Year prize.

The Saint Kentigern College student is also NZ under-19 national champion over a standard distance, Erin Baker Cup champion, the Auckland secondary schools under-19 and Auckland Triathlon Club champion.

Whitburn says he’s still “really blown away” by the awards and has been fielding congratulations from friends, family, coaches and fellow competitors.
